Jocasta’s Gaze explores the quiet entanglement of love, longing, jealousy, and possession within the Oedipal bond. A boy gently brushes his mother’s hair, holding close a moment that appears tender, yet carries an unspoken wish beneath its surface: to become the center of her world. Her presence is both comfort and desire, while the absent father lingers like a shadow between them. The painting transforms this private tension into a symbolic interior, where affection and rivalry quietly coexist. A caged bird echoes the mother’s emotional confinement, while the preserved cuckoo suggests intrusion, replacement, and the boy’s subconscious desire to occupy another’s place. Through restrained gesture, layered oil, softened edges, and intimate light, I sought to create a scene where tenderness never fully becomes innocence, and where the deepest conflict remains silent, suspended between devotion and possession.
